Gorgeous Dappled Bay Mare
The first thing we want you to know about Rhaena is that she is the most comfortable horse on the farm at the moment. I, Laura, would choose Rhaena to hunt all day over my Friesian mare and all other horses we have. Rhaena is a very quiet and gentle draft cross mare. She is 50% Standardbred and and about 48% draft with just a pinch of Iberian (i.e., Andalusian, Lusitano, etc.) in her. Rhaena is strong and sturdy. Suitable for a woman or a large man. Rhaena’s assessments revealed to us she most likely has been driven more than ridden so far in her life.
Rhaena stands 16.2-16.3 hands and weighs about 1300 lbs. She is currently barefoot. We rate Rhaena as an average keeper. She eats about 8 lbs of Strategy GX and approximately 20-30 lbs of hay per day. Unlike some horses that prefer the arena over trails or vise versa, Rhaena seems to enjoy both. I loved her from the moment I saw her. She reminded me of a Cleveland Bay and I thought she was just gorgeous. Riding her, she was easy and gentle so we decided to give her a shot in our program. We are very glad we did because she has excelled in everything we’ve put her into. She is developing a very solid foundation for her future human partner to develop into whatever they both can think of. Rhaena is not a fast horse. She is more whoa than go. When she arrived here, we assessed she needed additional work standing at the mounting block. Since her intake assessment, within approximately 30 days Rhaena is now standing quietly to be mounted. She stands politely while you adjust tack and then gently ask her to walk forward. Rhaena does not require heavy aids. She prefers light aids, especially legs. She is willing to move forward with light pressure. This is a mare you do not have to peddle or “kick” (never kick a horse). Rhaena is slated to graduate from our program by end of November 2024. She has been healthy and sound sincer her arrival and as always PPE is welcome at client expense.

CREK’s Evidence-Based Equine Development Program
We believe equine development is both and art and a science. To that end, CREK developed and uses a six-stage system to build solid equine citizens. All horses enter our program in Stage 1: Knowledge. We begin Stage 1 by taking a sample of hair for Etalon ProPanel+Ancestry ($329/horse) DNA testing. Next we have the horse vetted, our farrier provides hoof care, and our trainer completes the Intake: CREK Equine Scoring System Report. Upon completion, the horse moves into Stage 2: Comprehension. Here we develop a viable plan for the horse to move forward for further assessment.
Once the plan is in place, the horse moves into Stage 3: Application. This is where we get the DNA results back, execute any outstanding veterinary and farrier care action items. Then we move into Stage 4: Analysis. In Stage 4, we study the horse even further. During this phase we might consult with other experts towards learning what best practices look like for a horse of a particular makeup. We complete the horse’s “ethnogram” or “Hippology” study. Hippology is the study of horses. During our study, we analyze everything we can learn about the horse from where it lived before coming to CREK all the way to good habits and bad. Using the results of the Hippology study combined with medical and DNA information, as a comprehensive team, we draft the horse’s development plan. Using the CREK’s Scoring Checklist as a baseline for Psychology, Health, Conformation, and Performance, the horse moves into Stage 5: Synthesis where we synchronize Psychology, Health, Conformation, and Performance training. The horse is trained regularly and tested repeatedly until the horse achieves its program goals in the CREK Equine Scoring Method. Upon success, the horse is ready to graduate and moves into Stage 6: Evaluation. We fortify the horse’s developmental training success with a graduation veterinary examination and farrier hoof care. We confirm Psychology, Health, Conformation, and Performance one final time then horse graduates from our program. All in all, a horse typically completes our program within 3 to 12 months.
